A Reflection in 4 Parts: Hope in the Midst of Uncertainty

Feb 11, 2019 By Rebecca Testrake

If I am honest, I will tell you that I struggle with anxiety. And I know I am not the only one. Past experiences, current events, the unknown future — all of these things carry potential seeds that, once in our hearts, can sprout into outright fear. Yet, 1 John 4:18 reminds us that “perfect love casts out all fear.” It’s a profound mystery and comfort to me. Even in the middle of our struggles, we are invited to rest in the presence of God. Reflecting on this, I would like to offer four works for consideration this week:

  1. Days Uncertain by musician Nicholas Zork responding to Ecclesiastes 7:1-5
  2. [the earth is round no matter what happens] by textile artist Ayako Yoshida responding to Psalm 46:2–3
  3. 2 Peter 1:19 by dancer and choreographer Megan Chu responding to 2 Peter 1:19
  4. Word of Mouth by poet Emily Ruth Hazel responding to Isaiah 55:7–13

Each of these works holds the tension of living with hope in a world that can often leave us feeling so (as the song title says) uncertain. This week, I invite you to explore the pieces offered above as you also ponder the words of 1 John 4:18.
